Like the world (…not just Europe) and its dog, Jigowatt has been GDPR-focused these last few weeks – ‘GDPR’ means the new EU data protection law that comes into force today (25 May).

It’s got to be a good thing though.

Personal data privacy needs to be spot on if the so-promised Data Economy is ever going to take off. People will need to be in absolute control of their own personal data; simple as that. That’s what we at Jigowatt have always believed, anyway.

Jigowatt implements an exceptionally high standard of security for all hosting and managing of customer data. What’s more, we’re on schedule with our specific GDPR-compliance actions. As part of it, we have appointed our first Jigowatt Data Privacy Manager, John Conmy.

To the outside world and our customers, we have issued an opt-out email to recipients of our Newsletter. Today’s GDPR go-live date is just the right opportunity to do this – no doubt all readers have been deluged with similar emails from others. It’s not compulsory, just good practice.

We have updated our website Privacy Notice, and we’re working through our procedures and policies e.g. Data Breach Response Plan, Subject Access Requests, to make them GDPR watertight and, more importantly, genuinely keep any personal data held on our systems as secure as it can be.

John’s appointment will allow us to implement a fully managed system that can both secure data privacy, and demonstrate it. ‘Accountability’ is a key concept of the GDPR, and Jigowatt is getting across it. In the GDPR, the onus is on companies to demonstrate that their control measures and strategies are compatible.

…and GDPR-compliance as an ongoing process.

Therefore, with John on board, on top of policies and procedures, we are currently working on a range of strategic measures such as data inventory, mapping, auditing and classification of data by type. And it all needs to be kept in order and recorded, as part of a system.

To be honest, it’s a really useful spot of housekeeping and tightening up of our already pretty good practices.

So I’m pleased to say Jigowatt is on track. If you think we might be able to help you with your compliance, please drop us a line…
